Fontebranda, the historic fountain of Siena: a symbol of the medieval city
Fontebranda, the oldest and most famous fountain of Siena, located in the Third of Camollia, in the territory of the Nobile Contrada dell'Oca. The fountain, built in the thirteenth century, is an emblematic example of the Sienese medieval architecture, with its three Gothic arches and serene stone tanks. Fontebranda was originally formed by a succession of three tanks: the first was intended to contain drinking water, the second, fed by the overflow from the previous one, was used for the watering of animals, finally the third was used to wash clothes.
