The Crete Senesi and the Chapel of Our Lady of Vitaleta
The Crete Senesi, located in the south-east of Siena, are known for their characteristic grey-blue clay landscape. The Chapel of the Madonna of Vitaleta, built in 1710 and rebuilt in 1884 by the architect Giuseppe Partini, is one of the most iconic structures of this area. Perched on a grassy hill and framed by cypresses, the chapel dominates the valley, offering an example of Tuscan sacred architecture. The territory of the Crete Senesi is characterized by rolling hills, oaks and solitary cypresses, isolated farms and woods in the valleys. Typical of the landscape are the geological formations such as calanchi, balze and biancony, which give the place a lunar appearance.
