View of Cistern Square with the Torre Grossa and the Ardinghelli Towers
Piazza della Cisterna, Torre Grossa and the Torri degli Ardinghelli: the historic center of San Gimignano. The square, of irregular triangular shape, is characterized by the octagonal cistern in travertine, built in 1287 to collect rainwater. The cistern is a symbol of the city and a point of reference for visitors. Around the cistern, you can see medieval houses and towers overlooking the square with stone facades and red bricks. Among these stand out the Chigi Tower, the highest with its 43 meters, and the Tower of Becci, with a arched bifora to the sixth.
