Scorcio del Sasso Caveoso a Matera
A characteristic corner of the Sasso Caveoso in Matera, one of the two historic districts known as "Sassi," recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The Sasso Caveoso is famous for its houses carved in the limestone rock, which show a unique historical stratification. The structures in this photo reflect the typical architecture of the place, with its eroded facades from time, stone staircases and small balconies overlooking internal courtyards. The houses, some of which date back millennia ago, continue to tell the story of a community that has been able to adapt and prosper in such a particular environment.
