The temple of Poseidon: the oldest Doric temple of Magna Grecia in Taranto
The Temple of Poseidon, located in Piazza Castello in the historic center of Taranto, is the oldest Doric temple of Magna Grecia. Dating to the 6th century BC, this peripteral temple is the only place of Greek worship still to be visited in the ancient village of Taranto. Originally dedicated to female deities such as Artemis, Persephone or Hera, the temple has suffered plunderings and uses different over the centuries. Today, the remains of the Doric columns testify to the ancient magnificence of the site.
