Castel del Monte is located on the top of a hill in the Western Murgia. No defensive purposes are known about the castle. It looks like a crown and maybe the castle was a some kind of monument to the emperor. It has been built during one of the most violent period of the struggle between the throne and the altar, ghibellines and guelphs.
