The memorial has been built by greek sculptor Vassos Falireas, funded by greeks americans citiziens. With this memorial Vassos Falireas wanted to celebrate the spartan sacrifice in the battle of Thermopylae. Besides Leonidas the two others statues symbolyze the Eurotas river and the Taygetos, famous places in Sparta.
